Why a recent waterless-wash test keeps landing on a trade-off

A major auto outlet just published its annual test of waterless car washes. They sprayed five products on a sports car and graded them on things like lubrication, working time, and finish.

Their takeaway was simple. The traditional waterless washes cleaned well but left no lasting protection. The ceramic-hybrid sprays protected well but weren't really built to clean. Their advice to readers came down to picking a priority.

We read that and thought about the bottles we make here in Sherman, Texas, because that trade-off is the exact problem our family set out to solve.

Why the trade-off exists in the first place

Most waterless sprays are formulated to do one job. A cleaning-focused spray uses lubricants to lift dust and road film off the paint so your towel carries it away without scratching, and once you wipe, the surface is clean and bare, nothing left behind.

The protection-focused sprays go the other direction. They lay down a ceramic or polymer layer, and cleaning becomes a secondary function. You get durability, and you give up some of the deep clean.

So the testers reached a fair conclusion based on what they had in front of them. If your bottle only does one thing well, you have to decide which thing matters more.

How we built Texas 2 Step differently

The test we mentioned made one point we fully agree with, and we'll say it about our own product too. Waterless washing is for light dust, pollen, and road film. That covers most of what your vehicle picks up between washes.

Heavy mud and caked-on grime are a different job. Wiping heavy grit across paint with any spray, ours included, risks scratching. Aircraft-grade car care means knowing when the right tool is a hose.
